Things for Tweens in Heartland Lakes

We get it, all kids get to an age where they’re “too cool” for the things they used to love, and it can be hard to find vacation activities that please them. In Heartland Lakes, we have plenty of activities they’ll love and that will keep them busy for your entire vacation!

Visit a State Park

There are several state parks and forests in or near Heartland Lakes, including the famous Itasca State Park – home to the headwaters of the Mississippi! You can also visit the Two Inlets State Forest, the Paul Bunyan State Forest, and others. Each state park has miles of hiking, biking, skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing trails, plus beautiful scenery and wildlife, that will keep you busy all day long.

Go Snowmobiling

Adrenaline junkies will love to snowmobile along the Heartland Trail or at one of several state parks. Rent top brands like Polaris, and Ski-Doo at great prices from places like Lakes Area Powersports. If you’re visiting in January, you can even check out the Heartland 200 – a snowmobile race through 125 miles of wooded trails and ditches. It’s exhilarating to watch!

Teach Them to Hunt and Fish

Avid hunters and fishers (or those that want to learn) will find plenty to do in Heartland Lakes. Hunters here enjoy hunting large and small game as well as waterfowl and birds – duck hunting is especially popular given the 400+ lakes in the area – depending on the season. For the fishers, Muskie, Walleye, Northern Pike, Lake Trout and pan fish, such as Blue Gills, Sunnies, Crappies and Perch, populate our lakes and streams, so there’s always something new to find!

Ride in ATVs or Side-by-Sides

A ride through the forest in an ATV or Side-by-Side will be something your kids can brag about to all their friends. The “Off-Road Triangle” – from Paul Bunyan State Forest to Two Inlets State Forest then down to Huntersville State Forest – has over 200 miles of ATV and Side-by-Side trails through towering pines. These are often in remote areas that many in the world don’t get to see – a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience!
