Deep in the Northwoods of Minnesota lies the Heartland Lakes—an amazing area from Osage to Akeley and Itasca State Park to Menahga, including Park Rapids, Nevis, Dorset, Lake George and everywhere in between. When you visit Heartland Lakes, you connect with nature, family, and tradition.
Whatever it is you’re into, there’s something for everyone in Heartland Lakes. You can visit Itasca State Park, home to the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Or maybe you’d prefer to ride your bike along the Heartland Trail, one of the first rail-to-trail systems in the US and a prominent link between our communities.
In the summer, you can stay at your favorite resort on the lake and go fishing, hiking, kayaking, biking and more. As the leaves change, our temperatures cool, but our forests become vibrant with yellows, reds and oranges—we’re one of the best places to see fall foliage in the US. Cruise through the forest on your ATV, or hunt your favorite fowl and game. In the winter, you can ice fish from an ice castle in the middle of a frozen lake, go snowshoeing, cross-country ski through the woods, or snowmobile along the Heartland Trail. And in the spring as the snow begins to melt, you can really see this area come to life.
Throughout the year, you can experience our culture by visiting one of our museums, attending an art exhibition, go shopping for hand-crafted goods, find unique antiques, eat at our fabulous restaurants, or take part in one of our numerous festivals and activities. A place like no other, Heartland Lakes offers year-round adventures.
